Welcome to downsview
Downsview is a beautiful little vineyard situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the Weald of Sussex.
Just between Hadlow Down and Crowborough, the vineyard was planted in 2010. We have a mixture of English grape varietals including Dornfelder, Bacchus and Ortega, and the Champagne grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. There is also a lovely little orchard with a variety of native English fruit trees. The habitat is stunning and charming; we also offer camping facilities so you can spend a night under the stars, a stone’s throw from the vines.
We are passionate about making delicious wines in this sweet and pretty corner of the world. We’d love for you to come and visit.
The Vineyard is planted on a gently sloping south facing plot in the Sussex Weald, an area of outstanding beauty and with far reaching views to the South Downs in the distance, from which the vineyard’s name originates. The vineyard is protected from the prevailing South Easterly winds by a natural copse of broad leaf trees as well as a perimeter of native hedging and wind break trees that we planted in 2009. All operations in the vineyard, including planting; trellis erection; shoot selection; bud rubbing; tucking in; spraying; leaf stripping; pruning and of course harvest are carried out by our family, with help during planting and harvest from a few friends. Every operation other than mowing the rows and spraying is completed by hand so every vine really does get personal care. The varieties planted are predominately for our white sparkling wine (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay) along with Dornfelder which makes our gorgeous sparkling red wine, and a still wine variety Bacchus which we planted as the resulting wine is just so good. The vineyard is currently very small with 2500 vines but we have plenty of space for further plantings in future.
Despite our small size we make all our wines and ciders ourselves, using modern winemaking equipment within our purpose built winery, powered by renewable energy. Our aim is to produce wines that represent the beautiful part of England that the grapes are grown in, rather then to try to emulate wine styles of other regions, such as Champagne. We produce wines that are quintessentially English, specifically from the Weald of Sussex and distinctly ours.
